As the seasons change, it’s easy to overlook one of the most valuable parts of your garden - your patio. Whether you've invested in porcelain paving, natural stone, or concrete slabs, maintaining your patio is essential for keeping your outdoor space looking its best all year round.

At Reshape Landscaping Ltd, we’re often asked how to extend the life of patios and keep them looking brand new. That’s why we’ve put together our Top 5 Expert Tips for Patio Maintenance - to help homeowners like you protect your investment and enjoy a beautiful, long-lasting outdoor space.

Tip 1: Regularly Brush Your Patio

Routine brushing is one of the simplest and most effective ways to maintain your patio. Using a stiff outdoor broom, sweep away dirt, leaves, moss, and seeds that can lead to staining or unwanted plant growth.

Brushing also helps prevent weed seeds from germinating, and if small weeds have already appeared, brushing can break them down before they take root or spread across your patio.

Tip 2: Power Wash Carefully

Even after regular brushing, your patio may still develop tough stains or weather marks - this is where power washing comes in. Using warm, soapy water or a pressure washer can give your patio a deep clean and restore its original appearance.

Important: When using a pressure washer, work slowly and carefully, especially around the joint areas. High-pressure water can loosen or damage pointing or jointing compounds if used incorrectly.

Tip 3: Stay on Top of Weeding

Weeds are a common problem in patios with older or damaged joints. If left unchecked, they can lead to cracks, lifting slabs, and an untidy appearance.

Be sure to remove weeds from the root - this prevents regrowth and stops them from spreading. Regular weeding is especially important in patios with wider or damaged gaps.

Tip 4: Refill Patio Joints

After removing weeds or cleaning your patio, jointing sand or mortar can be dislodged. Leaving gaps between slabs invites more weeds, water ingress, and even movement of the paving over time.

To keep your patio secure and neat:

  • Refill joints with kiln-dried sand for block paving

  • Or use a suitable jointing compound for slab paving

Keeping your joints topped up maintains structural integrity and prevents shifting.

Tip 5: Apply a Patio Sealer

For long-term protection, we recommend sealing your patio. A high-quality patio sealer acts as a barrier against moisture, staining, algae growth, and general wear.

Pro Tip: Be careful when selecting a sealer—some can alter the finish or even damage certain materials like porcelain or sandstone. Always check compatibility with your paving type and follow the manufacturer’s reapplication recommendations (usually every 2–3 years).
